History

The Mikey Show earns its name from show host Mike Esparza. He has worked in radio his entire adult life all over the country, From Rochester, New York, to Dallas, Texas.

The Mikey Show previously aired on KSJO in San Jose and KEGL in Dallas, but was let go from both stations.[1] Esparza did the evening slot on KIOZ from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 am from the late 1990s until 2004, broadcasting to both San Jose and Dallas via satellite. His stint in the evening slot ended a week after he started broadcasting the morning drive in early 2004.  His return to San Diego came on the heels of Howard Stern’s departure for satellite radio where he quickly established a loyal fan base known as the “P1s”and became the highest rated morning show in San Diego. The show aired on KIOZ until late December 2009 when it was annouced that Esparza did not resign with the station while his former cast remained at KIOZ to pursue their own show entitled The Show on January 4th 2010.

On January 12, 2010, it was announced on mikeyshow.com that The Mikey Show has moved to 94.9.[3]    The Mikey Show debuted live on February 1st, 2010.  During the show, listeners can now go online and watch the cast  thanks to Stickcam.

Cast members

Mikey Esparza
(Host)

Mike Esparza is a talk radio veteran, with over twenty years in the buisness.  He is a master of voice impressions, both of celebrites and his own made-up characters.  Mikey was once easily labeled a “Shock Jock” as his humor on past radio shows was considered raunchy and vulgar.  Today he is a devout Christian and credits Jesus Christ every Friday at the end of the show for saving his life from self-hatred and addiction to alcohol.  His sense of humor, however, has never left him and is a key component to his continuing success.

Steven Woods
(Sports Guy)

Woods (Woodsie) is a friend of Mikey’s from the time Esparza was on the air in Dallas.  Woods (as he prefers to be addressed by his last name) is also known as “The Kid” as he was the younger of the Baumann & Woods on air duo in Texas and definitely less refined than the dapper Baumann.

Jay Isbell
(Producer)

Jay a former employee of Clear Channel Communications. He was the promotions director until January of 2009 when Clear Channel had a massive budget cut and laid off 9% of their staff. From there Jay went on to create his own promotions company, named Isbell Productions. He was hired to do the 28hr show 2009 for KIOZ's Mikey Show. Jay is a tireless worker and a jack-of-all-trades.

Lauren O'Brien
(Assistant Producer)

Lauren O’Brien is originally from New Jersey but now makes San Diego her home.  Mikey discovered her on YouTube while he was searching for a new talent to add to his show. A stand up comic, Lauren’s “drunken Office girl” bit made her a YouTube sensation. Lauren does many voices and comedy routines that are sure to endear her to “M1s” (Mikey Show fans).
